Vreemd Beest (Strange Creature)
Five sculptural “creatures” travel from classroom to classroom in a mysterious box with a peephole. On the first day the children can only look; on the second day the creature emerges, a form without top or bottom that can be placed in many different ways.

The project invites children to look with attention and openness. It sparks imagination and encourages philosophical questions such as: What do I see? What is it? Where does it come from? Is what I see true, or are there other truths? In a world where media and information dominate how we see, fantasy and philosophy are essential.

An animation film based on the project, Strange Creature, was made by Cristina Garcia, with a script written together with Van den Berg. It has been presented at a range of international animation festivals, among them the Ottawa International Animation Festival (Canada), the Holland Animation Film Festival (Netherlands), the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (South Korea), the Bradford Animation Festival (UK), ANIMAGE in Recife (Brazil), and best of MONSTRA.
