Bloemlust (Floral delight)
Commissioned to give new visibility to the Bloemlust apartment complex in Leiden, Fleur van den Berg developed a project that combined poetry, history, and design with resident participation. The aim was to visually connect the high-rise and low-rise sections of the complex and to create a more welcoming atmosphere.
With an 80-year-old resident, Van den Berg visited the Regional Archive for inspiration. Children from the Pacellischool contributed drawings of floral silhouettes, one of which inspired the final design. A poem reflecting on memory, time, and the history of the site, was integrated into the visual language, together with words and phrases referring to the factory that once stood there. Inside the entrance hall, a large historical photograph, reworked by artist Koen Hauser, transformed the space into a place of shared remembrance. Additional resident wishes led to new lighting and plants, strengthening a sense of belonging.
