WANDEREN (WANDERING)
WANDEREN is an augmented reality app developed for the Slaaghwijk/Merenwijk in Leiden. By walking with the app, users encounter digital layers of dots, icons, images, and sounds that reveal stories and perspectives from the neighborhood. The themes range from local nature and ecology (gevogel, beemd), to personal narratives and poetry (mensenmoes), to history and imagination (zandloper, wisselaar).
The project was created from stories, photographs, and knowledge shared by residents, combined with contributions from professionals in theater, sound, and design. Rooted in the old Dutch word wanderen (“to wander, to drift”), the app encourages people to rediscover their surroundings, embrace detours, and experience their environment in new ways.
